The Biggest Rajapakse Lie
My father has a soft spot for SLFP leaning politics. Even though his vote has swung over the last 15 years, he is still a bit gullible when it comes to Rajapakses. And as many millions of Sri Lankans, he too believes that the government did a fantastic job when it comes to Covid.
Covid response is touted as a major success by Rajapakses, akin to the war victory in 2009. PM, in his discredited public address, went on to say that he did not save people from terrorism & Covid to keep them in lines!
So on this particular day, during a dinner table conversation, I asked my father,
Me : So why do you think they did so well in Covid compared to the rest of the world?
Father : I got my vaccine pretty early, didn’t I?
Sister : The second jab was very late, wasn’t it?
Father : Hmmm, yeah sort of
Me : Do you know anything about vaccination and mortality related statistics of Covid of other countries?”
Father : Not exactly, but I’m sure we are ranked very high
Sister : How high?
Father : Probably 2, behind New Zealand, definitely within top 5 countries
Then I told my father the grim truth. On an objective (yet depressing) measure such as the number of deaths per million population;
Sri Lanka is at 82nd as of April 07 2022!

All our neighbors such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal are ahead of us!
If you are surprised, don’t be. The incompetence and the arrogance of Nandasena Gotabhaya and the imposter intellectuals who he has surrounded himself with, made a mockery of vaccine procurement and prioritization.
